Step-By-Step Process on Dress Sketches for Fashion Designing Beginners
A fashion figure is not proportionate to the human body. Commonly, it follows the industry standards of the “nine head” length, which means the length of a fashion figure is approximately nine times the size of the drawing’s head. This is because, these elongated fashion figures enable to showcase of garments, notably dresses and skirts. And here is a step-by-step guide:
- In the centre of the paper draw a vertical line down. This is the line that stretches from the head to the feet and is the centre of balance of a fashion figure.
- It’s time to divide the paper into nine equal blocs that include the head, bust, waist, hips, thigh, calves, ankles and feet of a fashion figure. And now, draw horizontal lines, approximately an inch to separate the nine sections.
- First, start with the pelvic area. Draw a square in the middle of the balance line for the fashion figure’s pelvis which can be curved in different directions to create different poses.
- Draw the body part and shoulders. To create the torso, draw two lines uphill from the top of the pelvic square. These lines curve inward and outward to construct the waist. Remember that the shoulders must be close to the same width as the pelvis. You can angle the shoulders to create a pose.
5.Time for the neck and head. For the head draw a circle in balance with the body and the neck is required to be one-third of the shoulder width and half the length of the head.
6.Coming down to the legs, they should be approximately four times the length of the head. Divide the legs into two sections: the thighs and the calves. Starting with the thighs, the top of the thighs must be the same length as the head. Sharpen the line down to the knee and the same to the ankle. Make sure that it results as the ankles are about one-fourth the size of the head. Finish the feet making sure that they are approximately the length of the head.
7.Following the same trick, draw the arms. Draw the tapered lines to the elbow and then continue to the wrist. It’s your choice that the arms can be positioned alongside the body or posed on the hips. Complete the arms part with the hands and fingers.
8.Now your fashion figure is sketched, you can start creating your fashion design on top of the figure.
9.Illustrate and shade the design to detail the movement of the fabric or to light where material gathers on the garment. Add embellishments and colours to the fabric to exhibit your own style.
Do put these steps of fashion illustration dress sketches for fashion designing in practice for perfection.
