How to Photograph Fireworks?
When it comes to fireworks in photographs, they look beautiful and full of light and colour. You might wonder how to capture the fireworks in an image the best without issues. To photograph well, start by determining a good shooting location. You use camera settings that help you achieve a high-quality image.
Tips for Modern Photography with Fireworks
- Select the Shooting Location
In an open area, look for a high spot and position yourself, such as a ledge in a field. Make sure that you can see where the fireworks are supposed to be in the sky from your point. That is you are at an angle of 45 degrees from the ground when you look up.
If you would like to include people in your shots, you may pick a high spot that you can move down easily, so that you can be closer to crowds.
- Check That the Spot is Upwind
you get a clear shot when you select the spot that is upwind from the fireworks. Shooting downwind from the fireworks might cause some smoke to get images. So, it is better to prevent this by choosing the shoot location that is upwind of the fireworks. Check the weather beforehand, to determine the wind conditions and plan accordingly.
- Pick a Spot That Has a View of the Skyline
For a unique shot, choose a landmark that has a view of the skyline. To make unique shots, you may include a beautiful city skyline or a historic landmark. The task is to find a shooting location that allows you to see the skyline clearly or go for a spot where a landmark or building appears on one side of the frame.
You always have a chance to shift your shooting location slightly to get different objects in the foreground. Similarly, no objects at all in the shot. It is always advisable to choose a location where you can move around and play with different compositions.
Now, it’s time to talk about setting up the camera.
- Switch The Camera to The Manual Mode
You might not require an expensive camera with a lot of settings to photograph fireworks. The truth is that you can use a digital camera to get a great image in manual mode.
- Make sure the focus switch to manual mode because this will allow you to focus the camera.
- If you are shooting on your smartphone, download an app that allows you to have a slower shutter speed.
- The amazing thing is that some digital cameras have the advantage that they have “Fireworks Mode” on the settings in the menu options. Use this mode as this allows the camera to adjust the settings so that you need not do it yourself.
- Turn Off the Flash
Avoid distractions around you by turning off the flash. It can also distract you as well as bother others around you and is not strong enough to illuminate the foreground in the dark.
- Use Zoom Lens
Use a zoom lens to capture the fireworks. If you would like to opt for a telephoto zoom lens, look for one that is 70-200mm or 300mm, this is to capture the fireworks in full from a distance. Otherwise, if you would like to use a wide lens, then search for 24-70mm or 120mm if you are shooting a bit closer. It is good to have both in hand so that you can switch on to both as per the need.
- Start with a Slow Shutter Speed
Using a slow shutter speed advantages you, as the camera shutter stays open enough longer to capture the long light trails of fireworks. make sure you are not going lower than 2.5 seconds, as it is too low and causes the fireworks to appear blown out. Try different speeds once you set up your camera and get some different types of images.
- Set The Camera to a Narrow Aperture Field
To set the camera to a low ISO level start with an ISO at 100, as this allows you to use a lower shutter speed. You can usually leave the ISO at 100. This will keep the aperture narrow to capture the fireworks without allowing in over-light.
Try these tips in your modern photography and modern photoshoot for amazing results.
