1.Gather Materials

Choose a hard lead pencil to make light sketchy marks. These light marks must be easy to erase. These pencil marks don’t groove the paper, which is an advantage when you add colour to the image. Along with thick paper, a good quality eraser is also an important material.

• If you couldn’t get the right type of pencil, you can sketch with a number 2, but ensure to make very light marks and avoid pressing hard on the page.
• It is not advisable to draw with a pen as you won’t be able to erase it.
• To illustrate your clothing designs in detail, you will also need coloured markers, inks or paints.

2.Create a Croquis

Draw your croquis to create a model to the exact proportions you want or there are a few secret shortcuts you can opt for

• Download one croquis online. You can find them in a wide range of shapes and sizes, but download a croquis in the shape as per your requirement – a child, a man, a petite woman and so on.
• Now, it’s time to make a croquis by tracing the outline of a model. Achieve this just by placing a tracing paper over the model and lightly creating an outline.

3.Decide on a Pose

You should draw the model in a pose that will show off the items best. Select the pose of the model – walking, sitting, bending or in any other position as per your interest. It is advisable for a beginner to start with the most common pose, which is a runway sketch. It shows that a model is standing or walking on a runway.

• Remember that different fabrics lie on the body in different ways. For instance, if the fabric is thin and silky, it will drift away or if the fabric is thick like denim, it looks boxy. So, include illustrating the texture of the fabric as well in your fashion sketching and also remember to add details like zips and buttons to make the drawing look more realistic.

3.Draw Creases

Learn to draw different textures – folds, wrinkles and pleats by using different types of lines to create different creases in the fabric that you are drawing. Start by outlining the patterned garment, divide it into a grid with different sections and fill in the sections with the pattern. The thing to keep in mind is to pay attention to how folds, pleats and wrinkles change the appearance of a pattern.

• Finalise with Colour

You can erase the body shaping lines and use thick black ink or paint on the lines that you want to keep and carefully colour in the clothing you want your designs to appear.

You can colour using markers, ink or paint and also mix colours to use a variety of shades. You can make your fashion sketch come to life by adding features like hair, sunglasses and makeup, which is a nice final touch.
