Indian Breakfast “Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper”. It is one of the most common proverbs and you might have heard it too. Even during our childhood, our mothers would force us to eat breakfast properly because it is one of the most important meals that give us energy for the rest of the day. Above all your breakfast should be healthy and the South Indian breakfast falls under the healthiest category. Cooking in the morning can be a task especially when you are working or have kids. Indian cooking consists of a long process most of the time, but for breakfast we need something that can be made in less time. The list of South Indian breakfast falls in this category, although the preparation time of some recipes can take a while but the final dish can be made in a few minutes. There are different methods of cooking South Indian breakfast recipes and you can use any method to cook a lip-smacking breakfast.

1.Idli
Idli is not only one of the most popular breakfast recipes of South India but also the healthiest. It is popular in other parts of the country too and is generally served with coconut chutney and sambar. This soft and fluffy delicacy of South India is perfect for breakfast and keeps you full for a long time. They are easy to make as well although the preparation period takes some time. You can easily make this delicious delicacy at home. Let’s have a look at the cooking procedure of this recipe.
Ingredients required:
- Urad Dal
- Rice
- Water
- Salt
- Oil
- Idli Maker
Soak urad dal and rice overnight or for 5-8 hours. After that, make a smooth paste of it in a mixer grinder. Keep on adding some water gradually so that the batter is not very thick. After the batter is done, leave it overnight for fermentation. Make sure you store the batter in the warm place to boost the fermentation process. In the morning, add salt as per taste and mix the batter thoroughly. Make sure your batter is not very watery else it will not rise and the result will be wet and flat idli. Now grease the idli maker using oil and pour the idli batter into it. Now steam the idlis for 15-20 minutes on medium flame and serve this hot-piping South Indian delicacy with sambar and coconut chutney.

2.Masala Dosa
This South Indian delicacy is one of the most popular breakfast that is not only loved in the southern states but also in the other parts too. It is very famous in different countries as well. Masala dosa is a rice-centric recipe and the dosa in this recipe is a thin crispy crepe and the masala is the filling made of potato and tossed in flavourful masala. Making masala dosa is a long process but the efforts are worth it. Let’s have a look at the recipe of this delicious breakfast.

- Urad Dal
- Rice
- Salt
- Boiled Potato
- Oil
- Onions
- Turmeric Powder
- Green Chillies
- Chana Dal
- Mustard Seeds
- Cumin Seeds
- Coriander Leaves
For making dosas, you need to prepare the batter beforehand. The preparation of the dosa batter is similar to that of idli. Make sure that your batter is not very runny, else it will stick to the tava and you won’t be able to get crispy dosa. For making masala, take a bowl of boiled potatoes and mash them. In a pan, heat some oil and add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. When they begin to temper, add some chana dal and roast it. Now add the green chillies and onions and saute it well. Later add the mashed boiled potatoes, turmeric powder and salt and mix them well. Lastly, add the coriander leaves and stir them nicely. Your masala is ready. Now set it aside. For the preparation of the dosa, take a tava and heat it well. Grease it with oil and spread the batter over it evenly. Sprinkle some oil over it and around the edges. Cook it till the base of the dosa becomes golden brown. Now place a portion of the masala in the center and fold the edges of the dosa towards the center. Your delicious breakfast for the day is ready to eat. Serve it with coconut chutney and sambar. If you feel too lazy to carry over this long procedure you can skip making the masala and instead make a plain dosa.

3.Pesarattu
Pesarattu is another healthy and delicious South Indian breakfast which is made up of Moong Dal. It is like dosa but a healthier version of that dish. It is vegan, protein rich and gluten-free and is a popular breakfast recipe of Andhra Pradesh. Pesarattu is derived from two Telugu words- ‘Pesara’ meaning Moong Dal and ‘Attu’ meaning dosa. So basically, pesarattu is ‘Moong Dal Dosa’. Making this dish is very simple and you don’t need to ferment the batter like idli and dosa. It can be made instantly. Let’s have a look at the recipe of this dish.
Ingredients required:
- Moong Dal
- Rice
- Water
- Green Chilli
- Coriander Leaves
- Cumin Seed
- Salt
- Ginger
- Oil
- Onions
Soak moong dal and rice for 4-6 hours or overnight. After that drain the water and transfer it all in a mixer grinder. Add green chillies, coriander leaves, ginger, cumin seeds, salt and water. Blend it all to make a smooth batter. Make sure the batter is of the perfect consistency. If it is thick add some more water to get the desired consistency. If the batter is runny, then add some rice flour to get the perfect consistency. You can also add some gram flour (besan) if you don’t have rice flour. Now take a tava and heat it evenly. Grease it with oil and spread the batter over it nicely. Now sprinkle some oil over the batter and edges. Cook it till the base is golden brown. Sprinkle some finely chopped onions and coriander leaves over it and fold the edges towards the center. You can skip adding the onions and coriander leaves if you prefer to have plain pesarattu. Now serve the delicious dish with coconut chutney or ginger chutney.

4.Upma
Upma is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish made from Rava also known as sooji or cream of wheat. This flavourful recipe of South India involves cooking roasted rava which is tossed with several other ingredients like cashews, onions, ghee or oil, coriander leaves, urad dal, chana dal and much more to make it even more delicious and lip-smacking. The best thing about this dish is that it is not only healthy but can be made quickly too. Let’s have a look at the recipe of this hot steaming delicacy.
Ingredients required:
- Rava
- Onions
- Green Chillies
- Coriander Leaves
- Curry Leaves
- Ginger
- Chana Dal
- Urad Dal
- Oil
- Cashews
- Mustard Seeds
Take a pan and heat it evenly. Add some rava of fine variety and roast it well. Roast the rava till it starts to look dry, separate and crisp and leaves a nice fragrance. Make sure the rava doesn’t turn golden brown. Separate it in a different plate as soon as you smell the nice aroma of it. Now take a different pan and heat some oil into it. Then add some mustard seeds to the pan. When you hear the crackling sound, add cumin seed along with chana dal and urad dal. Stir often until the dal starts turning brown. On a low flame add a few cashews in the pan and stir it well. By the time cashews start turning golden brown add onions, green chillies, ginger and curry leaves and sauté them well. After that add some water to the mixture along with salt and let it come to a boil. Stir the mixture evenly on a medium flame. Now bring the flame to its lowest and add the roasted rava in the 4-5 batches using a spoon. Stir the mixture evenly after every batch so that everything is mixed evenly. Allow the rava to cook for 2-3 minutes with the mixture before removing it from the flame. Your delicious breakfast is ready to eat. Top it with coriander leaves and serve it hot. You can serve it with lemon slices, sev, lemon pickle, coconut chutney for idli podi.

5.Ragi Dosa
Ragi dosa is a healthy and delicious dosa recipe which is made up of ragi millet which is also known as finger millet. The preparation of this dosa is similar to that of the masala dosa but the taste and flavour is very different. This is a common breakfast recipe in South India but it is also eaten for brunch or even sometimes for dinner. Ragi dosa can be made instantly and therefore, it is considered as the perfect breakfast recipe. Let’s have a look at the recipe for ragi dosa.
Ingredients required:
- Ragi Flour
- Rice or Wheat Flour
- Curd
- Water
- Salt
- Green Chillies
- Oil
- Mustard Seeds
- Cumin Seeds
- Curry Leaves
Take a bowl and add ragi flour, curd, salt and water to it. Mix it thoroughly and set it aside for 15 minutes. Now chop coriander leaves, green chillies and ginger and add them to the batter. Take a small pan and heat some oil in it. Pop mustard and cumin seeds and add curry leaves and ginger into it. Saute them for a few seconds and then transfer it into the batter and stir it well. Check salt and water of the batter and make sure that consistency is runny and not like the usual dosa batter. Grease the non-stick pan with oil and pour the batter over it. Make sure that you don’t spread the batter like dosa, just pour it into the pan and spread it. Sprinkle some oil over it and let it cook for a few seconds on a medium flame. Cook it from both sides and serve it hot with coconut chutney or ginger chutney.

6.Uttapam
Uttapam is a healthy and lip-smacking South Indian breakfast. These Indian style pancakes are made up of fermented rice and urad dal batter. This breakfast recipe is very common in South Indian homes and is eaten with chutney, sambar or podi. It is one of the most loved breakfast recipes and has a crisp base and soft and fluffy top. Let’s have a look at the recipe of Uttapam.
Ingredients required:
- Onion
- Green Chillies
- Ginger
- Curry Leaves
- Coriander
- Salt
- Rice
- Fenugreek Seeds
- Urad Dal
- Puffed Rice
- Oil
For the batter, soak rice, puffed rice, urad dal and fenugreek seeds overnight and then blend them all in a mixer grinder. Leave it overnight for fermenting. Take a bowl and add finely chopped onions, green chillies, ginger, curry leaves, coriander leaves and salt to taste. Mix them nicely and set the mixture aside. Take the batter and mix salt into it. Now heat a pan and grease it with oil. Now take a ladle full of the batter and spread it on the pan. The base should be thick and don’t spread the batter like dosa. Now spread the toppings on top of the uttapam evenly and press them gently. Sprinkle some oil over it and around the edges and cook both sides on a low flame. Serve it hot with coconut chutney, ginger chutney or sambar.
