Neeta Lulla – The Achiever
Neeta Lulla, hailing from Mumbai, is a world famous Indian fashion designer who has established herself in the fashion industry with an illustrious career spanning over 30 years. She has amazed all especially with her benchmark costume designs for Bollywood since the year 2000. She has won the National Award for Best Costume Designer 4 times.
Her history with fashion has given the movie world exquisite costume designs catering to commercial and period films. She has always considered the fashion industry as an extension to the Indian film industry where her masterpieces has won her very deserving accolades.
Neeta’s Hamstech episode
Hamstech, keen to nourish the prospects of its fashion designing students, started an association with Mrs. Neeta a decade back. She became the mentor for the fashion designing students at and subsequently became the Chief Advisor of Hamstech’s fashion designing department.
Her role in rolling out the Calantha fashion events, that showcased the works of students in fashion designing courses at Hamstech, has been instrumental. She has always taken pride in the students doing exceptional work under her guidance.
Mrs. Neeta has frequently graced Hamstech with her inspiring presence to interact with the students and other fashion enthusiasts. Her visit for a live Q&A session at Hamstech on May 17th resulted in the sharing of valuable insight. This event followed the visits of other mentors like Mr. Avinash Gowarikar (Photography Department) and Mrs. Shabnam Gupta (Interior Designing department).
The Q&A session has been a typical interactive session that enlightened many a student and fashion enthusiast.
The Q&A Event, May 2017
The Q&A event conducted on May 17th, had Neeta Lulla answer questions on fashion designing and reflect on different facts and facets of the fashion industry. The interaction was highly motivating and informative. It also touched upon Mrs. Neeta’s own outlook, likes and experiences in her career in fashion.
She instilled confidence into students of fashion design career courses reassuring them that there are numerous trending options like fashion consultants, stylists, makeup artists, and fashion photographers to take up if not a fashion designer. She also highlighted on the job opportunities with multi-brand and retail outlets where the present trend is to place fashion consultants, rather than sales people.
She advised fashion designing students to keep themselves updated with the trends. She emphasized on the need for reinforcing the basics and doing extensive reading. According to her, observation is the key to inspiration and focus with perseverance is the mantra to success.
An interesting observation she made was that since the supportive roles in fashion industry have developed into specific jobs fashion designers can now focus on his/her core job.
She also talked about how she designs costumes for movies, her favorite designer and her observation on what fashion is. She also encouraged students to develop their individual style statement.

The Hamstech team very much awaits her upcoming visits. The students eagerly await her reflections on the current industry trends and on what students need to work towards. Also, the approaching HLabel show, due in a matter of months, calls for her mentorship and fresh motivation.
She has always done her best to set up a show like HLabel which is a major platform for the students to get recognised for their creations. She has been extremely supportive in building up the quality of content for the fashion and design courses.
